Elder Adoption Ceremony

It was a significant day for students, staff and community members of Coowonga State School on Tuesday the 29th of November. This day marked the adoption of Aunty Joyce, the only elder of the Darumbal community. Aunty Joyce has significant ties with the school with two of the students being a great grand niece and nephew.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dancers from Rockhampton State High School performed traditional dances at the ceremony and also showed the students some of the traditional weapons used for hunting.

School Captain, Kristy Peach shared the story of Coowonga, an aboriginal man in which the community was named after. The aboriginal man was known for saving famous politician King O’Malley who came to the Emu Park area in the 18th century seeking a cure for his illness.

Aunty Joyce was presented with a certificate of acknowledgement and as Aunty Joyce’s first official duty as the Elder of Coowonga State School, she assisted with the unveiling of a plaque acknowledging the traditional land owners, the Darumbal people and opened the school’s ‘Yarning Circle’.

Pre Prep Days

Coowonga State School is once again holding its annual Pre-Prep transition days to assist children in the transition to Prep.

These days will be held across four weeks on Wednesday the 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th of November from 9am to 12pm. This is a wonderful time for the Pre-Preppies to experience the routines involved in coming to school. They will participate in multiple activities involving hands on learning experiences.

Pre-Preps need to bring along their hats, closed in shoes and morning tea on these days.
